A Church for Lynette Scavo or Desperate Housewife Preaching

Friday, April 25th, 2008

I have been a fan of the show Desperate Housewives since it first came on the air in 2004. In fact the first season is the among the best narrative preaching I have ever heard - it is so good.

Two weeks ago they aired an episode on church that I thought was terrific. The entire episode is worth watching and you can here. I cut out 11 minutes worth of the Lynette storyline and have posted it here

It is in my wheelhouse of opinion about church and the role of people, sermons and the pastor. Watching it I kept saying, “uh huh…

If you want my take on this it is in my book

But, this version might even say it better.

Discussion with Russell Rathbun

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Russell, pastor of House Of Mercy in St Paul, and I chatted for about a half hour. The conversation was mostly about preaching and the books we each wrote - Post-Rapture Radio and Praching Reimagined.

In many ways these books are saying opposite things about preaching, but they are also saying the same thing. We chatted in the sanctuary of his church building in St. Paul. We also video taped the conversation and are going to try and do something with it.

If you have not yet picked up his book you should.

The conversation lasts 31 minutes.

Preaching Re-Imagined

Preaching Re-imagined is sort of part 2 of the Re-Imagined series. In fact, Church Re-imagined was given that name after the title for PR was picked. I really should look again at a third Re-imagined installment. I would do the evangelism book under this title but the already is one called Evangelism Re-Imagined.

But, for this blog back to the preaching book. I was leery about doing a preaching book and took it on at the suggestion of the editorial group picking books for the line emergent books with Zondervan back in the day. I am glad that I did the book and hope it is helpful to people. I think PR almost fits into the “business book” genre in that is it has one key idea and runs with it. In many ways it is a quick read, but it has deep implications.
