A Church for Lynette Scavo or Desperate Housewife Preaching
I have been a fan of the show Desperate Housewives since it first came on the air in 2004. In fact the first season is the among the best narrative preaching I have ever heard - it is so good.
Two weeks ago they aired an episode on church that I thought was terrific. The entire episode is worth watching and you can here. I cut out 11 minutes worth of the Lynette storyline and have posted it here
It is in my wheelhouse of opinion about church and the role of people, sermons and the pastor. Watching it I kept saying, “uh huh…

Well, it is as easy as recording it to a DVR.
Then getting on your hands and knees and hooking up your DVD recorder to the DVR.
Then running the entire show while it records.
Then formatting the DVD - about 30 minutes.
Then extracting the DVD onto your computer with a special software - about 2 hours.
Then reformatting the ripped VLC file to a MP4 format. - 30 minutes
Then importing the Mp4 format into imovie. - 30 minutes
Then splitting the file into just this story line - 20 minutes.
Then exporting the file as a mov file - 30 minutes
Then uploading the file to a server - 30 minutes
Then pasting the link into your blog.
So, no big deal if you have 6 hours to kill.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve never been a fan of the show, but I did like this a lot. Don’t know if you read UnChristian yet, but it hits on some of the topics raised here.
BTW, a more streamlined way to edit this kind of video would be to have a TV-tuner card/USB device and record it directly to your computer. I’m not sure how many there are out there for Mac, but there are a ton for PC.
One other way would be to have the video/audio hooked into a video camera that is also hooked up to your Mac via firewire and capture it was you watch.
Yeah, I’m a bit of a techno-geek!

I can see the main liners now issuing a decree now:
…A Call for Repentance issued to Doug Pagitt for 1) Watching ABC 2) Watching Desperate Housewives and 3) Liking it!
You might as well fess up now Doug, you probably have bought a new Ford recently haven’t you! Probably have been living it up at Disney Land too! Someone call Don at the AFA, we need a boycott against Doug Pagitt now!

Doug~ I had no idea you are a DH fan! I too watch the show and thought this segment was fantastic! The whole Scavo story line is the closest to real life, I think, which is probably why I watch the show. Just fantastic.

What is wrong with you guys? How can we as Christians justify watching the majority of television programs, yet alone something so seedy, lustful, enticing and evil as DH?? Jesus tells us in Philippians 4:8:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Can I ask (in fact this is rhetorical) Does DH really fit into any of those ?, even an episode on ‘church’ goers!? Get real guys. Doug, you need to repent of this and take it off your website. DH is full of filth, the kind we as Christians should stay well clear of. There is a lost and dying world out there, millions of people have never even heard of Jesus and you guys are watching Desperate Housewives yet claiming to be Christians. Get out there, preach the Gospel, obey the commands of Christ, walk in holiness and fear of God and stop watching this stuff. The world and TV (yes even DH) is full of the things mentioned in v20-21 of this passage:–
Galatians 5:20: idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…
I will be praying for you, that you will open your eyes to the Truth of God’s Word.

Is that last entry for real? There’s no way it can be serious! If it is a joke: Well done! You’ve nailed the self-righteous Christianese babble.
Mr. Pagitt, don’t know if you ever read these entries, but if so: I’m reading A Christianity Worth Believing and I’m loving it! In particular your line regarding “uh-oh Moments”, and how some of them leave you reeling for years really touched me. I’ve been reeling for a couple of years now and hearing someone else say that’s happened to them makes me feel like it’s okay for the journey to take a while and that many answers don’t come quickly or easily.

Wait. You must rethink & go back to what Tris is saying. It does not come off in any way as self-righteous, it is Biblical. In giving their opinion, advice, whatever, they used Biblical scripture to back it up. Is that not what the Holy Spirit does? Do we confide in these scriptures or don’t we? God’s Word is black & white, clearly written.
Jesus tells us in Philippians 4:8:
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
We MUST be careful as to what we take in to our thoughts. It is true “garbage in,garbage out.”
Please be careful out there friends. God’s Word is clear in that we are set apart from the things of this world. Perhaps to some this sounds extreme. By God’s standards & Law, do you think that He believes so?
