Interview with Brett McCracken about Hipster Christianity from Radio Show

Here is my  Interview with Brett McCracken about his book Hipster Christianity from my Radio Show.

The upstream video had that I normally use had an audio problem during this interview, so this format is a bit different.

The interview has 3 parts (two that are just over 7 minutes and one that is nine minutes).

I did the best I could to try and understand his point in the book, but had a hard time reconciling what I was reading in the book and the Wall Street Journal editorial with what he said in the interview.

Take a listen for yourself to the 3 videos below and let me know what you think.

I liked the book, although there were some parts I wasn’t too big on. He makes it sound like the emerging church is just about being cool, instead of rethinking what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

He does, however, bring up one good point. Can we be so wrapped up with culture that we forget the message of Jesus?

I found this really maddening to listen to. He didn’t give any specific examples of “hipsters” he thinks are doing it badly, and the only time he got close, with Bell and Winner’s books on sex, he backtracked from. And the only thesis or positive contribution he seemed able to articulate was “Don’t chase fads.” Do we really need a book-length treatment on “Don’t chase fads”? Surely he must have something else?

First Impression: Presumptuous! Course how do you talk about what he’s presuming to talk about? Or should we say to that an image over haul is really just about being fake and if your fake in a little you might be being fake in alot. I know a story of a pastor in a “mega church” who supposedly had a requirment that he must wear a hair piece in order to pastor the congregation because they just wouldn’t recieve a message from a bald pastor. Message: If you are a follickally challenged pastor either bye a really good hair piece or don’t hope to pastor in a mega church setting. I think that might be more to the point. Not gonna purchase his book, but will be interested in following his progression and see what he has to say in 20 years about the subject.

I think it is good to recognize there is this hipster trend, but maybe this book wasn’t the book to debut discussion on this subject.

I think part of whats going on here is this guy is not yet schooled in how to interview and make your stance clear. He probably didn’t get far on debate team (Doug probably could have faired better).

Great questions :)

Interesting article…
I am interested to read the book in its entirety. These interviews and the first free chapter online are at the very least intriguing.

shameless plug.
