Like a Rock Star

Some went to see Bruce Springsteen play his guitar. Some were there to play their guitars. And a few, make that 6 played Bruce’s guitar with him – and that was us.

Here is how main floor seating works: All main floor seats are general admission. So, they order people by doing a lottery. You arrive between 2-5 PM with a general admission ticket and get a wristband.

The tab from the wristband has a corresponding number and is placed into a bucket. After all the bands are given out – like 2,000 of them, you line-up according to your number in the roy Wiklkins auditorium.

Then they do a drawing. Some specially selected kid reaches in and pulls out a tab.

The little fella pulled out 13099. We were the next in order. Mine being 13101 (the guy gave me 13100 but it tore at the number so he threw that one and gave me the next one)

We didn’t know at first how it worked, then it became clear that we, Shelley, Amy, James, Katharine, Dave and I were numbers 2-7.

We were then moved to another staging area, where we waited with the security guard “565″ and received another special wristband that gave us access to the front section of 300 people. This took another 45 minutes or so.

It was in this place we had to make decisions about food and water, the access to bathrooms later in the evening. We were concerned that we would lose our place if we left for tha bathroom. And since it was like 6:15 and the show would not end until 11 panic was in the air.

After the wait were led outside and then in a special door and escorted to the front section. Here we positioned ourselves right on the seam in the center of the stage. Where we waited 2 more hours for the show to start.

img_0098.jpg

When it did it was unreal. No one between us and the band. We all kept looking at each other like “are you kidding me?”

img_0097.jpgimg_0099.jpg
The normal position of the band was maybe 8 feet from us.

When Bruce would come to the front of the stage he would at times be one inch from me or straddling me.

This is where the playing his guitar came in. He came and knelt in front of us and invited us to strum his guitar along with him. I hope someone got a picture of this. Apparently we were caught on the screens showing the stage on a number of occasions. I wonder if I could get a copy of any of that footage? Anyone know?

It was so great. The show was stupendous. There are more photos on my flickr site, but my iphone is not that great of a camera. I totally wish we had our small camera with us.

It is 8:30 the next morning and my ears are still ringing.

So, in beautiful fluke we won the lottery and had a tremendous night.

By the way, anyone know where I can pick-up a PowerBall ticket?

Here is a link to a slideshow with music.

Where were your palm branches? I’m sure Bruce wouldn’t have minded…

That is the coolest thing I have ever seen in an emergent blog, Doug. Bruce puts on the best show every time.

Looking forward to seeing you in Big D.

I had the 2nd best spot in the house. Not being a fan myself [a student bought me a ticket], I had great sightlines of the 6 of you from behind the stage and was able to experience the concert vicariously by the looks on your faces. [James yawned a lot!] I was touched by the Boss singing “Livin’ in the Future” to a couple of young kids in the front and pulling the little blond haired girl next to you up on stage. I liked the way he gave his harmonicas away. Big Cat didn’t miss a single lyric! But watching you guys strum the guitar was the highlight!

I agree with Mr. T. From my seats behind the stage the look on your face throughout the entire concert was priceless. And I think the baptizing with the harmonica had to be one of the highlights from last night.

is coveting your neighbor’s “springsteen seats/strumming his guitar” covered in the 10th commandment?
